' This is supposed to be in a table '

Lego

Characters: Protagonist Vs Antagonist scenario, Emmet = The chosen one ,Wyldstyle = Sidekick with more skill at the beginning, Vitruvius = wise , Emmet Mentor

Narrative: Normal guy is ' Chosen ' to save the universe and free the people from the leadership of lord business ( Cooperate Leader )

Matrix
Setting: Real world ( Humans being farmed for energy ) Post apocalyptic , Computer generated

Messages: Believe in your self, Power of the mind, Freedom from controlling powers

Narrative: Normal ish guy is ' Chosen' to save the world and free the people from the control of the computer programed machines

Evaluate the advantages and the disadvantages of the intertextuality relationships between The Lego movie and the Matrix
Think about:
Target audience,
Themes and messages,
Matrix is 20 years old.

The Lego movie and Matrix are very similar because The Lego movie was based on the Matrix.
The advantages of the intertextuality in the two movies is how they both have a similar plot and they are both interesting and have an almost exact same narrative, but also have/has a different target audience two each other E.G. The Lego movie is aimed for children roughly 15 and under which is the main audience that play with Lego, The matrix on the off hand is mainly amid at ' Young males ' 18 - 29 year olds as it is stated. They are both movies that have similar messages which is Believe in your self and Freedom from controlling powers which is underlined a lot in both movies quite a lot. There is one advantage for the matrix and that is now 20 years old and the franchise is still very popular in 2019 and the Lego movie is now 5 years old and both are still popular with there target audiences.
The disadvantages however are that they both have all but identical narratives which does get boring after a while and then the messages are the similar and this is also a little boring for the movie wise.

Postmodernism

postmodern films often contain the following characteristics:

Challenges genre conventures : might be a mixture of many genres; challenge typical characters roles ETC

pastiche : imitates other text, humorous take on society/culture

Hyper-reality: Makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie
E.G. Lego to real ife

Postmodernism questions what is real and what is absolute(Palmer 2014)

Explain how The Lego Movie is a postmodernist film.

The Lego Movie is a postmodernist film because it challenges different genre conventions like: Comedy , Sci-fi, Children. This also clashes with typical character roles, Emmet the main character is Funny, Fictional and kid friendly which also makes him a likeable character, Wyldstyle also challenges this as she has all the skills at the start but then becomes similar to Emmet at the end of the film ,the same can be said for most of the other major characters. The Lego Movie also plays with pastiche as this imitates the other text of the Matrix movie because The Lego movie's story was based on the Matrix and this movie(The Lego Movie) pokes fun at the real world by having the character lord business run the universes of Lego and this is poking fun at the real world by saying everyone is being controlled by these huge businesses, it make fun by saying everyone follows instructions to be perfect and fit in to how the huge business wants it. The Lego Movie uses Hyper-Reality, or they remind the audience they are watching a movie by using the real life section near the end because the viewer might get draged in and believe this is all happening.

Propp's Spheres Of Action

He identified different character roles necessary to make up a narrative.

He said these are always apply:

Target audiences

L/O: To identify the target audience using demographics & psycho graphic

The target audience:
Family audience
This can be split-up into the following groups:

Young children who play with Lego
Parents who played with Lego when they were young too
Young adult cinema-goers

Explain how the movie appals to each part of the target audience

Young children who play with Lego
Parents who played with Lego when they were young too
Young adult cinema-goers
Both genders

Young children who play with Lego
The part in the movie which would appal to young children who currently play with Lego would be at the end when the Duplo 'aliens' come to take over the city of Bricks Burg

Parents who played with Lego when they were young too
In the movie the part that i believe that would stand out to adults who used to play with Lego is the part when we meet the master builder Benny, this is the 1980's Lego spaceship character who is obsessed with making spaceships

Young adult cinema-goers
In this movie all but the whole movie is appalling to young cinema-goers because they are still at the age of them remembering the Lego sets and this is filled with those Lego sets they used to play with

Audience profile
Audience profiling is the process of defining exactly who your target customer is, by monitoring consumer buying behaviour across multiple platforms.

My Audience Profile:

Age: 5 - 75
Race: -
Location: Anywhere in the world
Employment Status: -
Personality: Likes to play with Lego or see movies
Values: -
Attitudes: -
Interests: Movies and Lego
Lifestyles: Movie blogger, Child , Any

Why these? Well i chose all these answers because people of any age above five would have played with Lego even when they were a child or even just herd of Lego as it is a huge business. You definitely don't need to be a certain race, this is universal. Again you don't need to live in a certain country or town to watch this movie and this is the same with your employment status, because you could have no job and still go to see this movie. You would be better off having a more child like/Lego player/Movie lover personality to enjoy this movie. Values and attitude are the same with that you don't need anything certain to watch it. You'd be better off if your interests were Lego or Movies because you would instantly be in the running to liking this movie, this also applies for your lifestyle but you don't need to have any particular life style.

This is a table to help show your employment status or the whole Demographics

You would most probably find people who watched this movie to be in the D class up to the A - B class.

This table would help with Personalities or the Psychographics

The Lego movie appel's to the young kids who play with Lego, Parents who played with Lego when they were young too and when they watched the matrix and finally young adult cinema-goers. The reason this movie would appel to the young children who play with Lego is the whole movie being made of Lego and that is a toy that they would enjoy playing with and enjoy watching on the big screen. The whole movie would be appeling to young cinema-goers, because they have just passed the age of playing with Lego and fondly remember how they liked it and also how the movie include's super hero's and celebrity's they might like I.E. Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks. Finally, the whole movie will stand out to adults because when they were teen's, they went to the movie's and watched the matrix which is what the Lego movie was based on and this the adults might like that and then big celebrity names might also draw them in like E.G. Morgan Freeman and Will Ferrel

The Lego Movie : Marketing

5th June 2019

L/O: To explore marketing & promotion of the Lego movie; to link the methods to the target

What is a 'Tent-Pole' Production

A tent-pole production is when a program or movie supports the financial performance of movie studio or television network .A Tent-pole movie may be expected to support the sale of tie-in merchandise. A movie that was expected to do very well and bring in a large profit that can help fund more movies.

Why was The Lego Movie one of these

The Lego Movie was a Tent-Pole production because it was the most successful / highest earning movie of 2014, and because the Lego movie sold lots of movie-Lego related merchandise. This was a massive project and they had a mass appele that had a high cost to produce it that the profits help fund other movies produced by Warner Bros.

What are the benefits of that for Warner Bros.

The benefits of this for Warner Bros. Is that they had a large income of money that help them to fund more movies and new types of movies and production / genres that they would do and for. Also you could use the money to finance new writers and directors, or to market / promote a new movie

Different Ways To Promote Movies
Printed promotion
Tv Adverts
Online Adverts
Web Sites
Company Cross-overs
Trailers - Teaser trailer comes out way before the film and only 30 seconds
              - Theatrical show off the movies in larger detail and about 1 - 2 minuets

Social media - Producers social media accounts and adverts
                      - Celebrities social media accounts teasing the movie
Games
Merchandise
References - Hint or secret in a game about the movie
                   - Hints or secrets in a teaser or theatrical trailer
                   - Hints or secrets between different company products

Synergy

Integration

Warner Bros. A Clomglomerate

integrate - join / put together - Horizontal integration
                                               - Vertical integration

Vertical integration - The parent company owns multiple business for different stages of the film industry, going down the line of film production, posotive all profits go back to the parent company not split between lots of businesses.

Horizontal integration - the parent company owns multiply company's at the same stage of the movie production, going across the line of promotion, posotive again all profits go back to the parent company and is not shared between lots of businesses.

Questions
1. Whats the name of the company that owns lots of smaller companies ?

A Clomglomerate . correct

2. What's the benefit of being one of these ?

You will make money and keep the money and not share too much with other companies and then with you keeping the money from the smaller company's you own and will not have to ask for as much or any funding from other company's when making new movies and will then keep all those profits to make your value to continuously go up, you can also share skills and ideas and right. correct

3. Why is synergy a good thing?

Because in the end both company's get promotion and profits from the synergy, because they don't individually promote. correct

4. What is it called when a single company controls both the production and distribution stage of media product ?

A Vertical integration correct

5. What's the advantages of doing this?

They don't have to pay out for other companies to distribute or produce the movie and then get to keep all of the profits to help get your overall value grow and your money pot to get bigger as well. correct

6. What is a Tent-pole production ?

A movie that was / is expected to be successful and bring lots of profits in that will help to fund future projects. correct

7. What is the advantage of this for the production company?

They get all profits and don't have to share money or go out ' asking ' for funding from other companies just to make the movie and then split all the money with the companies that funded them. There money helps with more risker projects E.G New genres , new directors and new writers. correct

2 Captain America: Super soldier 2011

Why do companies often releases tie-in video games alongside the films?

Companies do this because if someone plays the game it will entreag them to then go and watch the film and then vise versa, this will help them maximize profits. This is good for the company because then the film promotes the game and the game promotes the film, this will also extend the pleasure of the film and you will ' be part of it', there will also be familiarity between the game and the film for people to enjoy and the characters are already know.

Blumler & Katz researched how and why people select certain media products over others, They came up with four main uses:

1 PERSONAL IDENTITY: Helps us consider who we are; what ideas and values we identify with.
2 INFORMATION :New information we want to know or take pleasure in knowing.
3 ENTERTAINMENT: Offers distraction from the word.
4 SOCIAL INTERACTION: We find things we can share and discuss with others.

This is constructed to appeal to its target audience, the content image is showing the main characters and the hero as the main focal point and the two 'sidekick's' are just to the side of the the hero, and there is no tag line. The layout of the poster is with the good guys at the front and the bad guys at the back, and the colours have been chosen to stand out to any one looking for a new game to play, the font is the iconic Lego bricks sticking with the theme of the movie, Lego. The poster shows off the main characters, like the hero's and the bad guys and one of the places it is set in and is show as the city is being over run by the bad guys. This main focal point / Importance of this poster is the hero is the most important and in the front and the villain is in the far back. The context is the characters as well as the city it is set in. The pleasure offered by the game is that you know the main story and you will actually will get to play as the characters/be part of the story. The cover represents the film by the character is just an ordinary guy and they go on an extraordinary adventure to save the city which is being over run.

A company would release a tie-in video game to go with the movie so that they can have the game promote the movie and the movie promote the game, to help maximise profits, they would also do this because the video game will extend the pleasure of the film because you will be at the centre of the story.

Gratifications offered by The Lego Movie Video Game cover art are the cover looks interesting and people would be intrigued to buy it because it possibly has a good story, Also the story and characters are familiar and the Lego brand as a whole is familiar so people would be encouraged to buy the game helping the business maximise profits. After watching the film you would know the story of the film and then playing it at the centre or just being part of the story would satisfy the players. Finally one of the main reasons a tie-in game is released with the film and this is to maximise the profits of the movie.

This is the final part to the design task:

11th Sept 19
Tv Advertising
L/O: to evaluate the methods used to market The Lego Movie: To link the methods to the target audience.

What do TV adverts normally show?

A TV Advert would normally show a few parts of the thing and the main producers and celebrities that worked on that project and make a trailer and shorten it to go on TV.

How are they different to the theatrical trailers?

Theatrical trailers show more parts of the plot and revel more information as these are longer.

When would you show the Lego Movie adverts? (Channels/Times)

7:00Am - 7:00PM, because this is when children,Adults and teens are going to be awake and most probably be watching TV Together, and on family programs like: X-Factor, BGT,

Lego and Wb teamed up with a couple of key Ad agencies to do something a little different...

They wanted people to be talking about the film so when it comes out they would go to see it, and make it a success. They went to ITV, Rather than creating expensive and highly - restricted programming content or compromising on the need for immediate , large scale impact by going on line. They decided to go and Re-make adverts entirely out of LEGO

In dancing on ice at 7.27pm on Sunday 9th February 2014 - five days before the movie launched - ITV Broadcast a world first and Ad break made entirely out of LEGO ... Four familiar and modern UK television Ads - for the British Heart Foundation, Confused.com, BT And Premier inn - were recreated frame by frame and brick by brick in Lego
To insure that the break felt as much like real-life had been turned into Lego as possible, it was important that all target groups saw this.

They guessed that turning peak time ITV into LEGO would stimulate a lot of " Did you just see that ", at the same time of it airing the same advert was posted onto youtube so people could share it with there friends and on social media and for those who didn't see it could see it, also the companies that were part of the Advert tweeted on twitter

Nearly 6 million people saw the Advert live as it was aired, with another 1.1 million people seeking it out on youtube within a week of the live airing and all of them watched it all, all 3 minuets and 20 seconds, it was written in about over 60 different consumer and trade publications. The movie ended with 2014 at No.1 in the UK box office charts, meaning it wasn't just the best performing children film but the most popular movie of the year.

Explain how the Lego Movie broke boundaries with branded marketing: how it targeted the different sections of their target audience: and whether it was successful, or not.

The Lego Movie broke boundaries with branded marketing because of there very popular and success Lego TV advert, where they Re-created TV Adverts that were being air at that time and so were well know, so when they were aired in Lego they were still recognised, They way the adverts were targeted at different sections of their target audience is with the British heart foundation being about CPR and aimed at adults, then with the next advert of confused.com being targeted at teens who were able to learn to drive and were looking for insurance at a low cost, then the BT internet advert being aimed young adults because they are the people who buy the WIFI and this was also because they might be buying a new house and want a fast internet, then finally the Premier Inn advert was aimed at adults again because they are going to be the one's who are going to be checking into a hotel or Inn and would be looking around for the best place. Then finally they added the 40 second trailer of the main movie its self to finish the advert, and the whole advert is aimed at children because it is all made of Lego. I believe that this advert was very successful because it got people talking about the upcoming movie and then when it did come out those who were always talking about it went to the cinemas to watch it.

5 examples of games that were released along side the movie.
1. Super Mario Bros. 1983
2. Golden Eye 007 1997
3. Ghost busters 2009
4. 007 From Russia with love 2005

This is constructed to appeal to its target audience, the content image is showing the main characters and the hero as the main focal point and the two 'sidekick's' are just to the side of the the hero, who is just a normal guy, and there is no tag line present. The layout of the poster is with the good guys at the front, who is holding a spanner which is large to draw your attention to it, it would also show that there might be construction of manufactoring, appeal to those people in the target audience who are creative and like to construct or fix things, and the bad guys at the back, the colours have been chosen to stand out to any one looking for a new game to play and want a well detailed game, the font is the iconic Lego bricks sticking with the theme of the movie, Lego, and is . The poster shows off the main characters, like the hero's and the bad guys, all of the characters that keep reacquiring thought the game, and one of the places it is set in and is show as the city is being over run by the bad guys and the good guys at the front looking as if they are about to save the city. This main value point / Importance of this poster/cover is the hero, at the front of the poster/cover , is the most important and in the front and the villain who is in the far back. We know that on publication the game that the movie was released with it so there can't be much difference with the games narrative and the movies narrative, and if you have watched the movie you are going to know the story and will have a good idea of what you are going to do in over the length of the game. The pleasure offered by the game is that you roughly know the main story and you will actually will get to play as the characters/be part of the story so you could feel that you are the hero who saves the city from the invading bad guys, and the Uses and gratifications offered personal identity is how the main character at the front of the screen is an ordinary male, and his sidekick is a female, this is to allow you to ' relate ' to them, then the information you find out by looking at the cover art is that the people in the front are the good guys and the people in the middle and background is/are the bad guys. The game would be entertaining to people who like lego because the whole game is made out of the toy, The fact that is is made of Lego is to target all of the younger children who like Lego/play with Lego, and it has a simple and self explanatory story for any one to understand, finally the social interactions offered are that you play the game by your self and then you go and tell you friends about it, or you play the game with your friends. The cover represents the film by the main 'hero' character is just an ordinary guy that doesn't have any special powers, so anyone can be a hero and you don't have to special, and how he goes on an  extraordinary adventure to save the city which is being over run, with just a spanner, which makes sense because he is a construction worker, but it looks like batman is going to be the hero because he is associated with being a hero. These elements i have identified appeal to the target audience in the ways: Young children will like the game because it is all made out of Lego, which most children at that age would be playing with Lego and so would find the game enjoyable because they get to play with 'virtual' Lego, the game would appeal to Teens because they are the typical people who play video games and would have just passed the age where they typical played with Lego but still might so the game would also appeal to them because of it being a video game and them having memories of playing with Lego. Finally, the game would appeal to adults because when they were younger they most probable played with Lego and would recognise the older Lego characters in the game, from when they were children and played with Lego, and they now have children who play with Lego and so would still remember when they played with it.

Poster Campaign
L/O:To explain the effectiveness of the campaign; To analyse the poster campaign

Image result for the lego movie poster

Analyse how gender is represented in the poster campaign for The Lego Movie.

The male gender is represented as the media's main stereotype, for example on the Emmet poster his hair cut and work cloths suggest that he is a hands on masculine man, according to the media, as well as the construction site in the background, and then on the Benny poster, his whole suit is a blue also showing off masculinity, the masculinity is shown quite a lot because most of the main characters are males, and all show there masculinity E.G. Emmet in the construction uniform and Benny's whole suit being blue. By looking at the main movie poster we can work out that the main character is Emmet, who is male, who is at the front of the poster with a comedic look on his face showing that he is the main character and he is also a comedic character which is common in male characters but not if they are in action movies.

The female gender is presented as the media's stereotypes, these are shown on the character Wyldstyle with her having the colour pink on her outfit, and Unikitty who is completely pink, also Wyldstyle is one of the only characters who has eyebrows and eyelashes which shows off her femininity, but the anti-stereotype that Wyldstyle shows is that she has dark hair which is not common for females in movies, and she is also a main character because on the main movie poster, she is next to Emmet who we can assume that Emmet is the main character because of him being at the front and then Wyldstyle is just next to him so she must be a sidekick making her a main character, as well Wonder Woman is in the main poster showing there is another women who is not a typical women because she is a main character and has one min feature showing off her femininity, which is her long hair, but that is countered by her hair being dark which is not a typical stereotype.

Peer Assessed by Caleb

WWW: You have identified the stereotypes of Emmet, Wildstyle and Benny well and in detail by referring to the things they are wearing and referring it to the movie.

EBI: Next time try to section off your work in different categories so it easier to read.

Explain at least tow uses and gratifications of video games using blumler and katz's theory. Refer to The Lego Movie Video game  to support your answer.

Blumler an katz's theory:

INFORMATION :New information we want to know or take pleasure in knowing.
ENTERTAINMENT: Offers distraction from the word.
SOCIAL INTERACTION: We find things we can share and discuss with others.

Analyse how The Lego Movie posters use stereotypes to create representations that are easily understood.

The Lego Movie poster campaign uses easily understood stereotypes to represent each of the main characters in the movie. This is done to entice a family audience because it is a world of Lego which is easy for everyone to understand, and the characters would be relatable to most people, therefore creating people to go and watch the film because they feel as if they are the same as a certain  character in the poster campaign.

The Emmet poster is the most significant because first of all he is the main character,Hero, but he just looks like a normal everyday person ,so he would relate to a lot of people who are just normal everyday people who believe they are be a nobodylike Emmet and could do something that makes them recognisable, recognised as a hero. His main stereotypes that are portrayed are; The blue colour scheme in the background is representing the blue colour associated with males, while Emmet also being in a construction uniform ;being a normal hands-on worker, finally his facial expression shows that the film will have aspects of comedy showing this character is going to be the comic relief throughout the whole film.

The Wyldstyle poster is the most interesting because the way she is dressed shows that she is a non-stereotypical female sidekick. This is because she is wearing all black clothing and has mostly black hair with a female stereotypical colour pink, but also has a , non-female stereotypical, male stereotypical blue colour in her hair. Wyldstyle is a non-typical female character because she has the colour strips in her hair which is not a common female stereotype, while she is also the one of a few character in the film who has facial detail, and they are; Eyelashes, lip stick and freckles. The lip stick show that she is sticking to a female stereotype with is especially with it being a pink confirms this. Finally, her facial expression shows that she is a serious character who also has a soft kind side to her.

The Lord Business poster show us straight away that he is the villain, we can infer this because of his angered facial expression, he is a stereotypical villain who is also a business man who will do anything even glue others to keep him and his business going, these are clear signs of capitalism. He like Wyldstyle is a character who has facial detail, he has a monobrow and lines on his face signifying his facial detail, and clear importance in the story, other wise he wouldn't have as much detail if he was just a side character.

Finally on all of the character posters they have the characters name and who plays the character, this area would appeal to the adults because they would know who those actors are and know if they like that actor. They all also have the 'The Lego Movie' title, which is made out of Lego, sticking with the movies theme.
